IU WINS ITS EIGHTH NATIONAL TITLE WITH SEVERAL PLAYERS WITH ROOTS IN INDIANA
Indiana University captured its eighth NCAA National Championship, defeating Georgetown University 1-0 in Hoover, Alabama. Head Coach Todd Yeagley joined his father Jerry as NCAA Championship Head Coach winner, as well as members of the Indiana Soccer Hall of Fame.
Once again, youth soccer in Indiana was on display as Indiana University featured 17 homegrown players on their roster of 29, including seven of the 11 starters. Two former Indiana youth players combined to provide all the scoring that was needed. The winning goal came off of an assist from Eric Zavaleta to Nikita Kotlov in the 64th minute. Georgetown goalkeeper Tomas Gomez rushed to the right of the goal to keep Zavaleta in check. When Zavaleta's header attempt came to the center, Kotlov then had a wide-open net and didn't miss. From there the stifling Hoosier defense made it stick Sunday.
