Referees, volunteers, and Indiana leaders unite to create unforgettable moments for 100+ special needs players
Kansas City, MO — Indiana Soccer staff had the distinct privilege of attending one of the most inspiring moments at the 2025 US Youth Soccer Midwest Regional Championships: the TOPSoccer (The Outreach Program for Soccer) Buddy Event—a celebration where the sport transcended competition and became a symbol of inclusion, connection, and joy.
Referees from across the Midwest volunteered their time and enthusiasm to serve as “buddies” for nearly 100 players with special needs, guiding them through the beautiful game in a safe, spirited, and welcoming environment. It was a day filled with laughter, high-fives, and the purest expressions of sportsmanship, leaving a lasting impression on all who participated.
“Attending the Midwest TOPSoccer Classic and coaching workshops was an incredible experience. It was truly inspiring to collaborate with passionate individuals from TOPSoccer programs across the country, all united in making the game more inclusive. Meeting athletes from all over the Midwest and witnessing their pure joy in playing soccer was absolutely unforgettable.” – Mary Schalliol – Indiana Soccer’s TOPSoccer Coordinator
Representing Indiana were several passionate leaders of the state’s TOPSoccer programming, including:
- Mary Schalliol, Indiana Soccer’s TOPSoccer Coordinator
- Laura Perry, Melissa Thomas, and Jeff Thomas, dedicated volunteers and longtime advocates for inclusive play
Also in attendance was George Perry, Indiana Soccer League Commissioner, who witnessed firsthand the magic of the program in action. His presence reaffirmed the organization’s unwavering commitment to ensuring that soccer remains accessible, inclusive, and life-changing for every child, regardless of ability.
“I wish all involved in our game would take the opportunity to witness first-hand what participating in a TopSoccer program brings to all participants. It reminds me of what participation in youth sports should be all about.” – George Perry, Indiana Soccer League Commissioner
Thanks to the leadership of Indiana Soccer, the generosity of volunteers and referees, and the passion of families, TOPSoccer continues to grow—spreading across Indiana communities and serving as a model of compassionate, community-driven youth sports.
