Jimi Kim: Celebrating Excellence!
2025 Indiana Soccer Boys Travel Coach of the Year Award
Indiana Soccer proudly honors Jimi Kim as the 2025 Boys Travel Coach of the Year — a recognition well-earned through decades of dedication, leadership, and unwavering passion for the beautiful game.
A Life Shaped by Soccer
Jimi Kim’s soccer journey began on dusty fields in South Korea, where he and his classmates spent every free moment with a ball at their feet. “Everyone played soccer,” Kim recalls. “Watching Brazil win the World Cup was one of the most exciting things on TV growing up.” That early exposure planted the seeds for a lifelong passion.
His family moved to the U.S. during his father’s diplomatic assignment with the South Korean government. Jimi went on to play varsity soccer from his sophomore through senior years, earning all-conference and all-sectional honors, and was named team captain and all-state honorable mention.
From Player to Mentor
Jimi has been coaching for over 20 years, starting in Eden Prairie, Minnesota, when his children first took to the pitch. His coaching path has included stints at Carmel United and Indy Fire, and for the last nine years, he has called ZYSA (Union FC Indy) home.
At ZYSA, Jimi found a coaching environment that encourages innovation and independence. “The club has given me the freedom to design my own sessions and methods — I’ve never felt boxed in,” he says. That freedom has translated into consistent success, with his teams achieving numerous milestones (details shared by team manager Andy in a special tribute).
Family, Faith, and Focus
A devoted husband and father of four, all of Jimi’s children played youth soccer — two continuing into collegiate programs. His youngest played four years at Butler University, while his eldest son competed for the University of Southern Indiana. His daughters also found success on the field, including three State Cup titles for the youngest.
“Soccer has been a family affair,” Kim says. “Coaching kept me connected with my kids and the game I love.”
The Coach’s Philosophy
When asked what helps kids succeed in soccer, Kim is clear: preparation, energy, and adaptability. He encourages parents to be supportive but realistic. “Positive feedback is great, but kids also need to learn from constructive criticism,” he advises.
His vision for the sport? Simplification and focus. “There are too many leagues, and it’s overwhelming for families. We need more clarity and structure.”
A Voice for the Community
Kim is also passionate about addressing broader issues, like referee abuse. “We need more education for parents and coaches,” he says, urging a culture of respect and learning. His advice to new coaches is simple but powerful: “Be a role model. Technical skills matter, but inspiration matters more.”
On Receiving the Award
For Jimi, this honor isn’t his alone. “The credit goes to the players and families who trusted the plan, and to my assistant coach Bryan and team manager Andy,” he says. “It was a team effort, and I’m grateful to Indiana Soccer for the recognition.”
Thank You, Coach Kim
Indiana Soccer congratulates Coach Jimi Kim for his exceptional contributions to youth soccer. His commitment to development, integrity, and fun sets a shining example for players and coaches alike.
