Mayor’s International Futsal Cup 2017
The third annual Mayor’s International Futsal Cup took place downtown Indianapolis, on Labor Day weekend with Bahrain taking home the championship medals in the men’s division for the second year in a row. Chile overtook team Mexico in an intense final match for the women’s division.
The champions were honored on Wednesday, October 4, at halftime of the Indy Eleven game against Puerto Rico.
The Mayor’s Cup is the largest adult futsal tournament in the United States, with teams representing over thirty countries. Though the tournament is the main spectacle, the atmosphere created by many communities coming together is what makes it truly unique.
“We love seeing different cultures interacting out here on courts. This event is about the universal languages of music, food, dance-and futsal, of course!” says Justin Becht, Director of Indiana Futsal.
In addition to the energy that the attendees bring, a multitude of organizations helped make the third edition of the Mayor’s Cup happen. To name just a few, United States Futsal provided the four futsal courts, with Indy Eleven, Indiana Soccer, and Downtown Indy also making significant contributions.
Obtaining the venue was a major feat. A partnership between Indiana Futsal and the Indiana Statehouse created the first ever opportunity to host an event in the space directly in front of the statehouse.
Sponsorships from Indiana Honda Dealers, Community Health, and The Shop provided the event with additional services including the on-site medical staff and custom T-shirts for each team.
